Why You Should Hire A Professional Photographer - Brittany Ross Photo
MEDICINE HAT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

Your wedding day is arguably the most important day in your marriage. It’s the foundation, and the start of your married lives together as husband and wife. There are so many important aspects of a wedding day that I, as a wedding photographer, am so passionate about and one of those things is obviously professional photography. In order to showcase the reasons as to why you NEED to hire a professional photographer for your wedding day, I am starting a new series on my blog highlighting WHY you need a professional photographer.

This first post is all about Experience. Experience in different lighting situations. A wedding day runs from 8am, allllllll the way to 2am in some cases. Which means we as wedding photographers needs to be prepared, and confident in shooting in all different lighting situations. From grandma’s pitch black basement, or mother natures blazing sun, to shooting in incandescent bathrooms, or purple DJ lights. It important to know that no matter what gets thrown their way, that your photographer knows how to capture all of it, confidently.

Let’s dive in!!

  1. Low light situations

Throughout the day wedding photographers will be forced into situations to take images with very to little natural or ambient light. This is where the experience of working in these situations come into play. Understanding your cameras settings and capabilities is a very important skill to have when shooting in low light situations. You must be careful not to push your ISO too high, to avoid noise within the image.

2. Direct sunlight

Shooting in direct sunlight is something that most photographers are terrified of at one point in their career. It’s scary to dive into the unknown, but when shooting weddings, 9 times out of 10 you will be put into a situation of shooting at 12 noon, and you need to be prepared to shoot in that harsh sunlight. It’s not easy to do, and definitely takes some understanding.

3. Incandescent Lights

The bane of my existence. Incandescent lights are tricky to shoot in, and even trickier to edit, but with experience (and lots and lots of swearing at my computer) I overcame my fear of the dreaded yellow lights. First one is before, second is after. Thank you Photoshop Gods!!! Hiring a professional photographer with experience and skills in editing certain lighting situations is very important.

4. Understanding flash

Another BIG reason you should hire a professional photographer is because in most reception venues, you WILL need to use a flash. Receptions are moody, and dark and very hard to capture with ambient or natural light, so hiring a photographer who is comfortable and experienced using an off camera flash is crucial when choosing your photographer (a pop up flash on a canon rebel won’t do the trick) The first image below was taken with my speedlight mounted on my camera, and then pointed to and bounced off the ceiling. The second image is lit with a video light on a stand to the right of me. I understand when to use which technique, in order to create the most perfect image.

4: Understanding flash pt. 2

Another interesting way to use flash while shooting a wedding reception is during the parrrtaayyy. By using my speedlight mounted on my camera, and a suuuuper slow shutter speed I can create this gorgeous effect with the ambient light. It adds more of a party-esque to the gallery. Again, I completely know and understand how to use my flash in all the ways it is capable of.

When considereing your wedding photographer it’s important to know that they are equipped in knowing and understanding how to work in all lighting situations. Ask the questions. Your wedding day is very important. Your wedding photos need to represent the beautiful day, in the most beautiful way.
